Shoppers in Dunkirk are spoilt for choice
Shoppers in Dunkirk should head to the town centre where a lovely mix of boutique shops pop up around Place Jean Bart. Also pop into Centre Marine shopping mall to shop in French fashion stores. Just out of town, you also have a choice of two hypermarkets.
These are Auchan and Carrefour hypermarkets. There are always some really good promotions at the hypermarkets and so these are the best places to stock up on Champagnes and beers.
If you enjoy shopping, you’ll want to take advantage of Dunkirk’s weekly markets, held on Wednesdays and Saturdays. There is also an annual flee market that takes place on Ascension Day in May or June, which can see as many as one thousand stalls set up in the town centre.
In Dunkirk itself you can find a first class cheese shop in the form of La Cremerie la Ferme, where you can choose from more than 300 varieties and sample Bergues, made locally from cow’s milk.
The most well-known patisserie in the area, Aux Doigts de Jean Bart, Patisserie Vandewalle is the place to go to seek out tempting, delicious, cakes, pastries and biscuits. These include the coffee-cream filled, chocolate-covered cakes, known as Jean Bart fingers.
Local merchandise is also showcased just outside of the town at Le Grenier du Lin, where all the fabric is made from linen woven from locally-grown flax. You can also find some lovely gifts here.
