Dunkirk at Christmas

The centre of Dunkirk will be transformed from 6th December as the town launches its Christmas 2008 festive programme.

CHRISTMAS ATMOSPHERE………..Christmas Lights, decorated shop windows, Christmas Market, forest of 150 Christmas trees near the Town Hall, sledge runs, a Father Christmas house on Jean Bart square, rides and games on each town square, street parades, musical entertainment, organised visits to the town centre’s landmark belfry and special Sunday shop openings, are just some of the features of Dunkerque’s festive events.

CHRISTMAS MARKET…… in the town’s Place Roger Salengro from 11.30am to 7.30pm daily from 13th to 24th December – an authentic and colourful Christmas Market with 41 exhibitors selling local food and speciality products, gingerbread, craft items, sculptures, champagne, mulled wine, jewellery, gifts and Christmas decorations.

SUNDAY SHOP OPENINGS….. all town centre shops will be open on Sunday 7th, 14th and 21st December in the afternoon.

EASY SHOPPING….4,800 parking spaces (1,000 free) next to two covered shopping malls “Centre Commercial Marine” and “Pole Marine” ; plus two supermarkets “Monoprix” and “Atac” in the town centre. Free taxi bikes (for two passengers) to take you around the town centre.

CHRISTMAS VISITS TO THE BELFRY…. enjoy viewing the spectacular Christmas lights at 58 metres high with panoramic views of Dunkirk’s harbour, town, beach and surrounding area from Dunkerque’s oldest monument ; Monday – Saturday in the afternoon.

EVENTS……..in the town centre locations of Place Salengro, Place Jean Bart, Place Valentin, Place de la Republique, and the Belfry include ice sculptures, parades, musical entertainment with highlights being :

FATHER CHRISTMAS…. abseils down the Town Hall Belfry on Saturday 20th December at 5.30pm ;

FUN FAIR….from 20th December to 11th January.

WINTER SALES….from the beginning of January.
